Painting miniatures takes a lot of preparation for me. Since I'm starting with no supplies whatsoever. So, I made a list of what to buy and you'll see them below.
Materials bought from the dollar store:
-
Shallow plastic container - for washing and prepping the miniatures. I chose the clear plastic so I can look at the bottom to see if I missed out some parts under the soapy water.
-
2 clear plastic tumblers – for the water during painting, 1 to clean the brush then the other to prep the brush for the next color.
-
Reusable adhesive clay – to hold the piece while painting. I'm not using glue gun because of the electric consumption. And luckily I found this.
-
Binder clips – i was thinking of using these to hold on the miniatures during the painting process since they're reusable.
-
Small square paper plates – could be handy. Non sure if it's wax coated, but after my first paint, I found out they aren't water proof.
-
Mini wine tasting glasses 10pc pack – since i don't have any spare containers to mount the pieces for painting yet.
-
Paint palette – for the paint.
-
Dining place mat – to keep things clean. I can't find the green cutting board yet.
From
the auto parts shop:
- 1 set of needle files – bought a cheap set and very sub standard. I'll replace them as soon as I can.
- Diagonal pliers with flush cutting edge - for cutting pieces from the sprue and removing the flash molds. I wouldn't recommend electrical pliers since they have bevelled edges and can't cut close to the figure.
From the supermarket:
- Super glue - I used the gel type.
From
the hobby store:
- Lamp with magnifying lens – uses 3xAAA batteries which I bought separately.
- Paints - I just bought 3 for the kit and an extra for future projects. Ended up coming back for more.
- White primer - I just chose white primer since I think it's easier to paint over.
- Brushes - they suggested a 3-piece set, the cheap ones which are synthetic. Sizes are 4-flat, 2 rounded and 0/2 (which I think is 00) for details.
Stuff I already have:
- Old newspapers - for spray painting the primer.
- Newly retired tooth-brush - used to clean the figures. Check for bits of food.
- Dish soap - for cleaning and I read it's also used to thin the water which I did.
- Swiss knife - Might come in handy and I don't have a hobby knife yet.
- Toilet paper - to absorb the water after cleaning.
- Paper napkins - Mainly for cleaning. Will also be used in preparing a wet palette.
